Kim Cherry Burnett serves as the Manager of Professional Learning Communities for ASCD. Additionally, she is a member of the Johns Hopkins University Clinical Faculty – Urban Teachers program. She also serves as adjunct faculty at American University teaching elementary math methods. Previously, she served as Deputy Chief of STEM for the District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS) in Washington, DC. Here, she led the school district in all areas of STEM education. She also served as Director of Professional Development at the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA). In this position, she led the Association’s efforts in providing professional development to teachers of science nationwide. She oversaw several programs in the Professional Development Department which focused mainly on elementary STEM education. Mrs. Burnett also served as the Executive Director of the Mathematics and Science Teachers Institute (MSTI) at Xavier University of Louisiana located in New Orleans. Prior to these administrative positions, Mrs. Burnett taught elementary and middle school grades in Prince George's County Maryland for ten years. She holds a Master of Professional Studies from Cornell University; a Master of Science in mathematics education from Towson University; a Master of Science in science education from Johns Hopkins University; and she earned her Bachelor of Science from Syracuse University in child and family studies with a concentration in child development and a minor in education. Currently, she is in the process of completing her Ph.D. in STEM education from George Mason University in Virginia - focusing on the resiliency of African American women in STEM. Kim has over 20 years of experience; she is passionate about education, and her mission as an educator is to promote academic excellence, enhance educational opportunities, and strengthen equity for all children and families.
