Meaningful Partnerships with Immigrant Parents in the Special Education Process

Parent engagement is mandated in the Special Education process. Legal mandates are primarily compliance oriented and do not ensure meaningful engagement and a shared understanding of the high-stakes decisions. This presentation will focus on barriers and solutions in order to develop agency for culturally and linguistically diverse immigrant families. The presenters will outlining previously documented challenges and resulting implications for parent involvement and student outcomes. Major findings will be shared using clear visuals and graphics. Practical implications for districts and parents will be outlined with the goal of developing shared understandings, responsibility and ownership of positive student outcomes. Throughout the session, the audience will have opportunities to briefly reflect on and share their own challenges and solutions. Time for questions and comments would be provided at the end of the presentation.
