Monday February 8, 2021

Lecture 2

On almost any measure of academic success in the US, Black students perform far below the average. In contrast, however, there are some schools where Black students outperform state averages on multiple indicators. For 15 years, the National Center for Urban School Transformation has been identifying, awarding, and studying these impressive elementary, middle, and high schools that serve low-income, urban students (without using selective admissions) AND achieve amazing results for every demographic group they serve. This session will emphasize WHY students of color excel in these schools. In particular, the session will explain how educators worked together to create cultures that resulted in a much higher likelihood that Black students would achieve at high levels.
