Lecture 2

Millions of elementary students have experienced major learning losses because of school closures due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Disadvantaged students, and those who had learning problems before the school closures, have experienced especially severe losses in learning, because they were least well placed to receive or benefit from distance learning. In this presentation, Dr. Robert Slavin, an expert on tutoring and on proven programs for struggling students, will discuss using one-to-one and one-to-small group tutoring using well-trained teaching assistants to heal losses and help students advance in reading and mathematics in elementary schools. Research has identified several cost-effective tutoring strategies that any school can use. These methods can add five months or more to students’ usual learning.
