Total Participation Techniques: How to Cognitively Engage All Students at the Same Time

Saturday February 2, 2019
10:30 - 11:30 AM
Grand Ballroom 2501 C

Total Participation Techniques are teaching techniques that provide teachers with evidence of active participation and cognitive engagement from all students at the same time. These sound difficult to implement, but by keeping in mind some fundamental principles, they are actually quite doable. This presentation will introduce a questioning technique that maximizes access to higher-order prompts and a model for planning and analyzing lessons that maximize student interactions within the context of academic conversations and critical thinking. The presenters will walk participants through examples and photos of the various techniques that have been implemented in K-12 classrooms, so that they can be embedded in lessons right away. The presenters will also provide access to digital resources, which can be shared and used to further the learning at participants’ various school-sites.
