Students living in poverty often struggle getting their basic needs met, which undermines their academic success. When an individual’s basic needs go unmet, they are less likely to self-actualize. To address students’ needs and remove obstacles to academic success, Cheyenne High School engaged the school community in a multi-year effort be a more inclusive, caring, school environment for students, teachers, and staff. Cheyenne successfully addressed students’ physical, emotional, and instructional needs. More students engaged and graduation rates soared. This session will show participants how to engage in courageous, challenging conversations about showing “care” and how to launch the initiatives and policy changes those conversations inspire. Participants will learn how to create a more culturally responsive campus, a sense of belonging at their schools, and how to establish support systems that increase engagement and academic success.
