Kansans Can: Two Words that Launched an Education Transformation

Wednesday January 30, 2019
3:30 - 4:30 PM
Grand Ballroom 2501 A

While Kansas students consistently outperform the nation’s average, that performance had begun to flatten. A decade of school funding litigation and contentious legislative sessions left educators feeling devalued. Something had to change. Three years ago, educational leaders traveled to communities across the state to learn what Kansans wanted from their public education system. The results of these community conversations shaped Kansas’ bold, new vision for education – Kansas leads the world in the success of each student. Confident in our ability to achieve this vision, KSDE and the State Board of Education adopted the motto “Kansans Can.” Join us as we describe how this new vision for education has united a state divided, reignited educators’ passion and is empowering the redesign of schools to better meet the needs of today’s learners and tomorrow’s workforce, all leading to one of the most dramatic transformations of public education in Kansas’ history.
