Gatekeepers: Disrupting School-Based STEM Program Selection Models

Saturday February 2, 2019
8:30 - 9:30 AM
Music Hall

Usually school-based STEM programs have a traditional application process that considers a number of criteria (grades, test scores, teacher recommendation, etc.). Other programs allow the admission of any applicant who expresses an interest. But what if there was a selection model that did not hinge solely on these measures? What if there was a selection model that abandoned traditional selection indicators and instead considered behavioral traits and dispositions necessary for success in STEM related fields and the 21st century? Come find out how a school "hidden" in one of Atlanta's southern neighborhoods is disrupting selection models in a way that authentically includes non-traditional participants in STEM education and re-shapes the presumption of who is worthy of learning STEM.
