Language Immersion as a Training Tool for Schools With Large English Learner Populations

Saturday February 4, 2023
11:45 AM - 12:45 PM
Room 103-106

The number of English Learner students is growing every year. As schools seek to better serve this population of students, new interventions are necessary to ensure student success. While most interventions focus directly on student-level interactions, a well-prepared staff is a prerequisite to success. In this presentation, representatives from the Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) and the Kentucky Education Association (KEA) will share their experience partnering with the BaseLang Language School to provide an online language immersion experience for teachers and leaders in Kentucky schools. The presenters will share an overview of the BaseLang program, a review of the research-based logic model that informed their work, and the results of internal research and program evaluation efforts that demonstrated increases in teacher and leader multicultural self-efficacy, empathy, and understanding for students, and changes to both policy and practice.
