If You Support Them, They Will Grow: A Youth Centered Approach to Leveraging Resources
In this presentation, learn how putting student equity at the center of conversations can help blend and braid federal funding streams to support more holistic wraparound supports, including afterschool programs, nutritious meals, career exposure and opportunities, and health and wellness. These evidence based supports yield real results including increased attendance, on time grade promotion, academic achievement and graduation. Hear from administrators and program directors working with Communities in Schools of Georgia and the Boys and Girls Club of Coffee County how their holistic models bring together partners and funding to work with students, families and communities to drive meaningful outcomes that make a difference in the school day and out.

Michael “Bull” Brown program director/CEO of the Boys & Girls Club of the Coffee County Region (GA) leads a 21st CCLC afterschool site for over 130 students from K-9th Grade providing opportunities from academic enrichment to STEM, tennis, yoga, gardening and more.
Carol F. Lewis serves as the State Director and CEO of Communities In Schools of Georgia, a statewide nonprofit providing support to K-12 students at risk of school failure. Carol has a background in social services, education, and volunteer services. Rooted in her experience is 20 + years with Communities In Schools facilitating and supporting the Communities In Schools model of providing integrated student support services in partnership with local schools districts and state-level education policy.
A Georgia Education Policy Fellow, Carol has served on numerous state-level youth and education committees including the Georgia Department of Family and Children Services State of Hope Advisory Council, Georgia Department of Education ESEA Federal Programs Subcommittee, Communities In Schools National TQS Governance Committee, Communities In Schools National President’s Collaborative Council and the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Development Committee for Communities In Schools National.
Jillian Luchner, as Policy Manager for the Afterschool Alliance, tracks, maps and advocates for policy that supports youth across the 80% of time when school is out including before school afterschool and summer. She works with partners in the field including afterschool programs, state level program directors, educators, the private sector, students and parents to share innovations of how federal funds can be leveraged through partnerships to support successful student outcomes in school, life, college, and career. A former 9th grade teacher and afterschool and summer educator, Jillian aims to build bridges among communities and funding streams that serve our nation’s youth.
