Closing the Achievement Gap for Marginalized Learners

Learn how Chief Leschi Schools, a K-12 school serving 100% Indigenous students, raised their graduation rate from 75% to 92% while the rest of the nation experienced learning losses due to the pandemic! This presentation addresses key concepts and foundations of school improvement in grades K-12, with a focus on closing achievement gaps. Strategies address learning loss and infrastructure to achieve intersecting growth. By combining the Indigenous Culture with rigorous academic pathways, we prepare our students to "Walk Successfully in Two Worlds." Discover how they used innovative practices to work alongside policy makers to create equity in learning.

Jeannine Medvedich

Jeannine has worked for over 25 years in education, having taught and served as a building administrator at all grade levels. She has served as district administrator Including Special Education Director, Director of Instructional Leadership School Reform, Chief Academic Officer overseeing Curriculum Instruction, Intervention, Special Education, Teaching for Learning, Principals, and Grants. She specializes in school reform and Intervention, closing the achievement gap utilizing best practices including Explicit Instruction, PLC, Inquiry Teams, Social Emotional Learning, and Neural Education. Additional experience includes Special Education including expertise in Emotional Behavioral Disabilities, Open Educational Resources, Total Quality Transition Outreach through University of Washington, and Social Emotional Learning.

Nancy Nelson

Nancy led the work to create a CTE program at Chief Leschi that is both Perkins compliant and transformational for students. She previously spent five years as an Instructional Coach for Technology and is a Microsoft Innovative Educator Expert.
