The Neuroscience of Reading from Decoding and Comprehension to Fluent, Skilled Reading
This presentation will review the new research on the best practices for reading instruction and mastery for elementary through secondary levels. The session will begin with a review of the four pillars of learning based on Stanislas Dehaene’s neuroscience research: Attention, Active Engagement, Error Feedback and Consolidation. I also will review recent neuroscience research on cognitive components now recognized as essential to reading mastery. These components have been applied to create a more comprehensive Simple View of Reading (SVR) and to update to Scarborough’s Reading Rope as well as to add to intervention strategies for students with Dyslexia. The lecture will conclude with curriculum and evidence-based methodologies that have been shown to augment the four pillars of learning including the emphasis on essential cognitive components of reading mastery and the curriculum components of phonology, decoding, comprehension, and fluency.
Dr. Burns is the Director of Neuroscience Education at Scientific Learning Corporation and an adjunct professor at Northwestern University who specializes in the area of neuroscience. She has several publications on the topics of neuroscience, language and reading as well as a new book to be released October 2020, Cognitive and Communication Intervention: Neuroscience Applications.
