Forging a Path to School Improvement in Uncertain Times: A Struggling School's Journey
This presentation will document how a low performing Georgia school with a high English Language Learner population went from failing, to one with the highest percentage of student growth in the Cobb County School District. Participants will learn the systematic process that the instructional leadership team used to revitalize collaboration, teaching practices and the overall culture of the school.
Adrienne Martin is an Academic Coach at Green Acres Elementary, in Cobb County, Georgia. For the past 20 years, she has worked as an instructional coach, teacher and teacher leader in a variety of Title 1 schools throughout the metropolitan Atlanta area. During her career as an educator, she has implemented and modeled research-based literacy and numeracy interventions. She has also led numerous instructional teams through collaborative processes for data analysis. As an academic coach, she strives for continuous student growth by building educators’ instructional capacity through focused professional learning design, personalized teacher supports, and targeted feedback.
Ashley Mize is a principal at Green Acres Elementary school in Cobb County, Georgia. Prior to that, she worked as a school leader for 13 years. She is a former instructional coach and worked at the elementary and middle school levels for seven years. During her 25-year tenure in Title 1 schools, she spent time observing how students acquire literacy skills in high EL population schools. In addition, she as studied practices that support continuous improvement and how to turn a failing school around. She has an Educational Specialist degree in School Leadership.
Jennifer Murchie is an Academic Coach at Green Acres Elementary, in Cobb County, Georgia. She has worked as an instructional leader for over 17 years in several Title I Schools in Cobb County as well as Columbus, Ohio. This work has cultivated her strong passion for equity in education and school improvement. As an Academic Coach she has worked closely with administrators to bridge the gap between instructional practices and improving student achievement. She graduated from University of Dayton with a degree in Early Childhood Education and Psychology, and Central Michigan University with a master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction.
