The Beautiful Simplicity of the Brain’s Backdoor: Science of Reading Made Simple
Did you know that the brain has a backdoor for learning and attention that's easily hacked into? Good magicians know this and take full advantage of it, as can great teachers! Using neuroscience as a roadmap, discover how to take advantage of “backdoor” learning systems to deliver phonics faster and get kids reading sooner. Research on the science of reading brings us closer to understanding how the brain learns to read, but not how our brains actually learn. We're wired to make connections and it's easier to learn and store information when there's an emotional hook to hang it on. The affective "feeling” based networks develop long before higher-level, executive processing centers are formed. By aligning abstract skills with what kids know and understand, we can leverage universal social-emotional intelligence to make phonics more easily predictable and empower ALL students to become fearless codebreakers and lifelong learners!
