Key Foundational Literacy Skills for Multilingual Learners

The goal of this session is to accelerate literacy and language gains for MLLs through targeted, differentiated instruction using embedded and immediate scaffolds. English Language Learners (ELLs) are the fastest growing student population in our country and these students deserve to be supported throughout their learning process, and especially in reading and writing. Participants will learn strategies to support vocabulary development, critical scaffolds to ensure mastery of foundational literacy skills, tips on how to use consistent language and frequent use of visuals to support comprehension, and ideas on how to provide ongoing opportunities for listening and speaking to ensure students are able to express their opinions. With the right supports and opportunities for engagement, MLLs can become successful, life-long readers. Together we will raise the educational attainment, career prospects, and prosperity of all young scholars.
