Gatekeepers and Bridge Builders: Leading Language Improvement in Schools
Language can serve as both a gatekeeper and a bridge builder for learners. By the time children enter school, there is already a wide disparity in their expressive and receptive vocabularies and their exposure to language. This disparity can continue to widen in schools, impacting student learning and literacy development at all grade levels. Leaders and educators will explore practical ways to improve language use and development in their schools, examine the impact of Language Demands, Language Expectations, Language Guidance, and Language Supports on language development, and learn a step-by-step process to increase Language Demands, Expectations, Guidance, and Supports to enhance language and literacy development at all levels. Educators and leaders will leave with a practical plan to immediately ramp up language development for students at every level.

Teresa Hill
Dr. Teresa Hill is an educational leader with over 25 years of experience in schools. Dr. Hill's research and practice focuses on improving outcomes and closing achievement gaps for all students. She is the author of two books focused on the achievement gap and is currently finalizing a book project with ASCD. Dr. Hill combines knowledge gained through research and practice in her presentations and writing.
