Participants will develop an understanding about how to effectively plan for professional learning opportunities in a culturally competent manner. The process supports developing professional learning that promotes a healthy school climate and culture where there is a focus on healthy relationships, a mindset for equity, and creating just and equitable environments. The tools that participants will explore include an event design to ensure both content and processes used to support the development of the audience and a step by step guide to promote healthy dialogue when making decisions about professional learning options.During the first section, participants will activate their prior knowledge surrounding leading and planning professional learning. Then, they will explore tools and discover the benefits of using these structures to plan professional learning. Finally, participants will synthesize their learning by applying the tools to their current needs.
Shannon Keeny has been involved in the work of inclusion and equity for almost two decades. She is dedicated to facilitating groups to move to a place of cultural competence both personally and organizationally. Since 2006, Ms. Keeny has presented at several international conferences, including Learning Forward, ASCD, and the Corwin Cultural Proficiency Institute. Additionally, she co-sponsors and organizes cultural proficiency institutes in her district, Howard County Public School System. She also co-authored an article for ASCD, Questioning Our Beliefs and Biases. She is co-author of Culture, Class, and Race: Constructive Conversations That Unite and Energize Your School and Community as well Lessons in navigating conflict from Northern Ireland in the Learning Professional 2024 . In addition to her position as a facilitator in the office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, she has been an adjunct professor for the McDaniel College Excellence and Equity in Education Master's Program.
Alyson Mitchel is a dedicated equity leader with over five years of experience guiding systemic change in education. With a background as a school psychologist and resource psychologist, she brings expertise in systems change, data-based decision-making, and school climate initiatives. In her current role, Alyson leads efforts to develop high quality professional learning structures, plans and leads professional learning, supports secondary school leaders, and serves as an equity liaison to leaders in academics, curriculum, and student well-being. She also leads initiatives to address hate and bias in school spaces and serves in her district’s crisis response efforts. Alyson’s work is centered on creating inclusive, supportive learning environments that foster equity and belonging for all students.
