Beyond the Kindergarten Backpack: Creating a Multi-Tiered System of Transition Support

Transitioning to kindergarten is one of the most important milestones in a child's life. Schools and families are challenged with the task of making this transition as smooth and seamless as possible. Yet it takes much more than a new backpack filled with school supplies and a meet and greet night with teachers to ensure that each child can reach his academic potential. In this interactive workshop, participants will discuss social-economic barriers and hidden obstacles that can impact transition and impede academic success in the early years. Participants will receive resources they can immediately utilize to reflect on current practices and enhance transition efforts beyond the kindergarten year. This in-depth presentation will provide proven strategies school can use to engage families, educate their staff, and collaborate with the community to create a multi-layered system of transition support that begins to level the playing field for all.

Laura Beaver

Laura has a MA in Elementary Education (K-6) with Academically Gifted (K-12) and Reading (K-12) licensures. She has taught 24 years and has over 15 years experience training educators at the school, district and state levels in literacy instruction, MTSS implementation and family engagement. When not working as a District Title I Facilitator, Laura and co-author Jill Nolen develop parent involvement children's books with embedded reading strategies, family engagement workshops and events that assist schools in engaging and sharing effective strategies for families to use at home with their children.
Jill Nolen

Jill has a MA in Elementary Education with a reading licensure. She has taught 26 years as a classroom teacher and a reading interventionist. In addition, Jill has 15 years experience training educators at the school, district and state levels in literacy instruction, interventions, and family engagement. When not teaching, Jill and co-author Laura Beaver develop parent involvement children's books with embedded reading strategies, family engagement workshops and events that assist schools in engaging and sharing effective strategies for families to use at home with their children.
