Unlocking the Potential in Every Learner: Working in Pictures and Words
What person, young or old, isn’t captivated by a magic trick? What student doesn’t want to learn how they too can make magic? In this session, participants will learn how to make a picture come alive using active verbs. This “magic trick” has proven to be a key motivator in exciting students of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities about words and word choice. And this is just the tip of the iceberg. Learn how to unlock the potential within every student through deep study of the dynamic relationship between image and text. Discover how working in pictures and words creates new pathways into literacy learning, fostering deeper thinking. Witness students drawn into a rich weave of reading, writing, listening, speaking, and language across multiple genres as they craft their own quality picture books. Beth Olshansky
Beth Olshansky has spent over three decades developing, field-testing, refining, researching, and disseminating an innovative approach to literacy learning that has been proven effective for a wide range of learners. Her evidence-based methods have been embraced by teachers and students across the U.S. and Canada. Director of the Center for the Advancement of Art-Based Literacy, Beth’s work has been awarded federal funding twice for development, research, and national dissemination. Author of The Power of Pictures: Creating Pathways to Literacy Through Art, Beth has also produced a variety of print and video materials.
