Perspective: The Key to Unlocking Student Motivation and Achievement

Perspective is a holistic concept and has informed mindsets, beliefs, attitudes, and emotions. A student or teacher's perspective is influenced by a variety of factors - life experiences, cultural influences, how one is treated, and how one experiences the educational system, as well as other institutions in the community. Outlook determines effort. Understanding a student's viewpoint on the value of formal education is the key to understanding the amount of effort that student applies to schoolwork. Students labeled "at-risk" are more likely to view education in a negative light, however, perspective is malleable, and teachers have an opportunity of influence. Dr. Mabry was labeled "at-risk" at an early age. By second grade he was suspended 12 times. In subsequent years, these set-backs compounded. In spite of the odds, he managed to not only complete college, but earn a doctorate and is now an acclaimed motivational speaker who touches the lives of educators and students.

Tommie Mabry

Dr. Tommie Mabry shares similar lived experiences with many students who are at-risk. Due to a lack of positive role models, he turned to life on the streets. He was expelled from numerous schools, and by age eleven had beed arrested. His life began to shift when he joined an AAU basketball team. Not even a shot in the foot his senior year could alter his positive trajectory, he received a full basketball scholarship to Missouri State University - West Plains. After completing his undergraduate studies at Tougaloo College, he taught school in the same district where he had been expelled numerous times before. This session and his best selling book are centered on his life story and the research/study done by applying cognitive learning theory which his dissertation was based on - earning him a Ph.D. from Jackson State University.
