Planning for Terrific Transitions

Based on the Kansas Can vision, the Kansas City, Kansas school district, particularly Emerson Elementary and Argentine Middle School, is focusing on developing smooth transitions for families and students from PreK to K and Elementary School to Middle School. Preschool families are part of a summer camp to transition preschoolers to Kindergarten and Elementary School students and families participate in the Bridge to Argentine as they move to Middle School. These transitions take planning with intentionality. This session will describe the planning steps and each of the transitions and their outcomes. Participants will learn how to apply these transitions to their own district and school. Opportunities for participants to collaborate and discuss transitions will be provided.

Ileana Farney

Ileana has worked at Argentinte Middle School for over ten years. She has been the lead person on the middle school transition plan.
Jane Groff

Dr. Jane Groff has served as the Director of the Kansas Parent Information Resource Center (KPIRC) for eleven years. While supervising all KPIRC priorities, Dr. Groff provides professional development and technical assistance on family engagement in education to Kansas districts and schools. She also provides trainings for families on parent leadership, parent advocacy and family engagement in education. She is a certified teacher in early childhood education, elementary education, and special education K-12. She taught for 25 years in both general and special education classrooms. Jane has earned a Masters degree in Education and a Ph.D. in Special Education from the University of Kansas. Jane’s passion is to increase meaningful family engagement in all schools.
Lusia Requenes

Lusia is the Family Program Consultant at Emerson Elementary for over 10 years and has implemented the K transition program.
