Vision for a Collaborative General and Special Education Program
Professional learning communities (PLCs) create a rich, student focused environment for educators to collaborate. However, traditional exclusionary practices and minimal funding for special education typically means that general and special education teachers do not have equivalent time and space to collaborate within the PLC model. This presentation explains how one school shifted paradigms to build an effective infrastructure that grew to integrate special and general education teachers, which lead the way to improve the Positive Behavioral Intervention & Support (PBIS), Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS), and restorative practices.
Christina Cho earned her M.Ed. and Multiple Subjects Teaching Credential from UC Irvine. She has 8 years of experience as a classroom teacher. Christina has worked closely with Education Specialists to provide the most inclusive environment for all students in the classroom.
Joe Petty is a highly motivated, big-picture oriented person who adapts quickly and enjoys a challenge. He has several years of team leadership experience, and strives for operational excellence by motivating and educating those around him through example.
Danelle Tickel earned her M.Ed. and Multiple Subjects credential from UC San Diego and is currently working toward her Administrative Services credential through UC Irvine. She has 16 years of experience as a classroom teacher. Through these years Mrs. Tickel has worked closely with Ed. Specialists to create inclusive classroom environments and systems that support students’ individual needs and IEP goals.
