Fraud and Abuse in Federal Education Programs

Listen to experienced criminal investigators from the Office of Inspector General (OIG) unravel the complex world of education fraud investigations. The presenters will discuss real cases and provide examples of fraud indicators to help you detect and prevent potential misuse of ED programs in your institutions. The presenters will also provide guidance on how to report potential fraud to the OIG. A question-and-answer period is planned as part of this presentation.

Edd Cole

SAC Cole successfully worked many complex fraud and public corruption investigations and received a number of awards for his accomplishments, including two IG Awards for Excellence (2010, 2013), a 2009 Law Enforcement Commendation Award for his outstanding work in the prosecution of Alta Colleges Inc., and a 2016 United States Attorney Award for his work on the Education Affiliates investigation.
Kori Smith

Assistant Special Agent in Charge (ASAC) Kori Smith joined ED/OIG in January 2003, where he has had the unique opportunity of working a variety of complex criminal and civil investigations in the Midwestern and Southern regions for ED/OIG.  ASAC Smith is a two-time graduate of Grambling State University where he earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and a master’s degree in public administration.  Currently, ASAC Smith supervises a dedicated and motivated investigative team in the Atlanta Field office where he continues to produce quality work and carry out ED/OIG’s mission.
