Scott Sargrad is the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Policy and Strategic Initiatives in the Office of Elementary and Secondary Education (OESE). In this role, he has primary responsibility for the Title I program, ESEA flexibility, School Improvement Grants, and other programs and initiatives for standards, assessment, accountability systems, and school transformation, and is the principal advisor to the Assistant Secretary in these areas. He is also currently serving as the Acting Director of the Office of School Turnaround, which administers the $5 billion School Improvement Grants program and coordinates the Department’s school turnaround efforts. Scott joined the Department in 2009 as a Presidential Management Fellow in the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research, and was most recently a senior policy advisor in the Office of Planning, Evaluation, and Policy Development. Prior to this, he taught mathematics, coached cross-country and track & field, and was a special education instructional assistant; he also worked on disability policy and taught English in Hanoi, Vietnam. Scott received his undergraduate degree in mathematics with a minor in philosophy from Haverford College and a master’s degree in education policy and management from the Harvard Graduate School of Education.
