The emphasis is always placed on student mastery and deep commitment by staff."

What is the single most important factor in the success of your school that others could replicate?
Much more than a prescribed program of a series of staff meetings, or a group of staff members collaborating around a certain topic, the SSPS community centers around the idea of continuous progress monitoring, in-depth reflection upon current instructional practices and specific measuring of assessed learning goals for students to ensure their academic achievement. Through purposeful, continuous collaboration with other team members, our staff is always seeking ways to improve teaching and our students’ learning experiences. The emphasis is always placed on student mastery and deep commitment by staff so that students will benefit from teachers learning from each other.
Identify the critical professional development activities you use to improve teaching and student learning.
Among other professional collaboration opportunities, teachers and support staff engage in “Learning Walks” in which they visit each classroom of the entire school to observe each other, provide feedback and share best practices. This is completed with two teachers at a time, throughout the course of a single instructional day, so as to see the vertical articulation necessary for success as well as each grade level’s role in the development of our students.
Collaborative analysis, reflection and review of these formative, as well as summative, assessment results, allows teachers to discover strengths and areas for growth in their individual pedagogy while simultaneously sharing best practices with and learning from each other. In addition, these assessments allow teachers to identify students who need additional academic or behavioral intervention and work together to find ways to best meet all students’ learning needs.
