Reeds Road Elementary School

"We have found that when students get excited about a project or event, parents get involved."
1. Tell us about your school’s success.
The staff at Reeds Road are the reason we are successful. They go above and beyond to make sure all students have access to appropriate instruction. The also work hard to make sure that coming to school is a positive experience for students .
2. Talk about the greatest contributing factor(s) that promoted positive change in your school.
Over the past few years, we have implemented a PBIS program that has been extremely successful. Since our mascot is Bubba the Bulldog, we named our program BARK, The purpose is to teach students positive behaviors and reward them for demonstrating them.
3. How has ESEA funding supported the school's success?
We use our ESEA funding in several ways. One way is to support our BARK program. In addition we created a position of Communication Coordinator whose responsibility's include maintaining our social media presence. We also use the funds to support activities for parents and students after school hours.
4. What professional development activities were used to improve teaching and learning?
Last year, we realized students were struggling with Conflict Management. We used a portion of our ESEA funds to purchase the book ""Waging Peace in Our Schools" This book became the foundation of our school wide PLC.
5. Talk about the cultural shift leading up to your school's success.
The biggest shift was a change in what teachers believed they could do. This was particularly evident in our Special Education program. As teachers built their capacity to work with disabled students, more students were brought back in from out of district placements. At first it was challenging, but over time, we redefined the boundaries of who can be successful in a public school setting.
6. How has community involvement strengthened your success?
Most of our community involvement is through parents. COVID made it difficult to engage outside of the building. With that being said, we are working on rebuilding many of our community programs. We have found that when students get excited about a project or event, parents get involved also. Our biggest community event is the Cultural ExTravelGanza that we hold each year. We invite members of the community to come share their culture with our school family. It is a great night of food, music and dance that is always well attended.
