"We strive to develop each child's social, emotional, physical, aesthetic and academic needs."
1. Tell us about your school’s success.
The Kentucky Department of Education and the National Association of ESEA State Program Administration (NAESPA) have identified Nicholas County Elementary School as a National ESEA Distinguished School for excellence in serving its migrant population. Nicholas County Elementary is one of up to 100 schools throughout the country that is being recognized for exceptional student achievement in 2022.
2. Talk about the greatest contributing factor(s) that promoted positive change in your school.
The vision of Nicholas County Elementary School is to work in cooperation with family and community to promote the development of skills necessary for our students to become 21st-century learners. We strive to develop each child's social, emotional, physical, aesthetic and academic needs, especially in the areas of writing and communication. We foster this development in a safe and caring learning environment. Every student, Every Day!
3. How has ESEA funding supported the school's success?
Elementary and Secondary Education Act funding has supported our school's success through educational professional development to all teacher's, upgrades to instructional technology, and new curriculum. SEAs have the flexibility to carry out a wide variety of activities with their specific needs. NCES has a migrant advocate, recruiter, and tutor to contribute to the school's success.
4. What professional development activities were used to improve teaching and learning?
Nicholas County Elementary adopted Open Court in 2021 which is a comprehensive reading program for reading, writing, and language. With this series, ongoing professional development has been mandated for all teachers. This year, NCES adopted i-Ready for diagnostic benchmarking and Mastery Connect for the competency-based learning platform which also required PD. We have become more data driven to focus on closing the gaps and accelerating the growth.
5. Talk about the cultural shift leading up to your school's success.
Nicholas County Elementary has become more data driven and focusing on John Hattie's Visible Learning Research. Our goal is for all teachers to become evaluators of their own learning. According to Hattie, Visible Learning and Teaching occurs when teachers see learning through the eyes of students and help them become their own teachers.
6. How has community involvement strengthened your success?
Nicholas County Elementary is the hub for Carlisle, Ky. Community involvement in schools can help increase student learning opportunities, boost student retention, promote optimism among teachers, and improve attendance rates.
