McClave Elementary School
McClave, CO
McClave focuses all we do on our four core values of excellence, honesty, integrity, and respect."
1. Tell us about your school’s success.
During the pandemic in 2021, McClave Elementary exceeded the state average in all tested areas except one. In areas that exceeded the state norm we were between 5 and 40% higher than the state average. We use the same math curriculum from Kindergarten -6th grade that spirals concepts throughout the years for mastery. We have now extended that to our 7th and 8th grade curriculum as well. In reading, we have revamped our intervention with the hiring of a reading specialist who works with our tier 2 and 3 kids in small groups for specified skills. Aligning reading blocks and making sure that we are teaching scientifically brain based reading programs and interventions has helped close the gaps for our struggling readers. This will continue with our early literacy grants as we work with consultants the next two school years to evaluate our student scores and progress monitor to assure immediate assistance and placement in specific groupings.
2. Talk about the greatest contributing factor(s) that promoted positive change in your school.
One of the greatest reasons for our success has been the implementation of our 21st Century Community Learning Center grant. We have utilized that to provide after school tutoring for grades K-12 for an hour after school four days each week. Additionally it provides both tutoring and enrichment activities for students on Fridays and throughout the year. It has allowed for more small group and one on one time for students who are struggling in specific areas. Additionally, with our rural area it has allowed us to bring in speakers for social emotional topics and provided more access to cultural experiences and artistic opportunities for all students.
3. How has ESEA funding supported the school's success?
Funding from the grants previously mentioned have given the school and our staff the ability to spend additional time with our kids who are in most need of additional help. In a district that does not have outside resources such as a daycare, or a community center our school acts as the primary after school program for the majority of our students. The grant allows for grade level groupings to be tutored in small groupings for an hour daily. Students can receive up to 6 additional hours a week of instruction, support and/or enrichment.
4. What professional development activities were used to improve teaching and learning?
Our teachers are currently participating in training through our early literacy grant that will reinstate DIBELS assessments in our elementary classroom. They are also receiving bimonthly training with a consultant to work on scientific reading research and explicit instruction.
5. Talk about the cultural shift leading up to your school's success.
McClave focuses all we do on our four core values of excellence, honesty, integrity, and respect. The biggest cultural shift in the last few years through the pandemic have been holding those values above all else. Whether we are learning distantly, wearing masks and following Covid guidelines, or teaching in a "normal' setting we hold all staff and students to these values.
6. How has community involvement strengthened your success?
The school is the hub of our community. Due to our rural nature most events and activities happen here at school. Our community works hand and hand with the school in educating our children and supporting teachers and staff. Community members volunteer as coaches, and help with many extra curricular and other activities throughout the year. Additionally the 21st Century/CCLC grant has helped create more evening and weekend opportunities to bring family and outside members into our school for a myriad of activities ranging from registration nights to community picnics and the ability to host a national play group to put on a week long drama workshop and play for our community.
