Teacher collaboration ensures teachers are in sync with the curriculum, while they prioritize, focus, and reinforce student learning.
Describe specific programs in place to ensure that families are involved in the success of your school and students.
Our Data Night has been successful in giving parents specific data on where their student is academically. It gives parents a baseline for the grade level, and parents can visualize where their own student is according to the baseline. Parents are given feedback and strategies to help their student.
Describe the most successful activity your school has initiated to strengthen ties to your community.
Our school has several events that strengthen our ties to the community. We have an annual Back to School BBQ, which features food, live entertainment, and activities for the families in our community. We also host an annual Fall Carnival, which provides carnival games, food, pictures, and a gift basket raffle. We hold a monthly parent meeting, which teaches parents important information about our school, and teaches parents practical solutions for helping their child at home.
What is the single most important factor in the success of your school that others could replicate?
Our school has worked hard to improve student attendance. Our school counselor, along with our parent coordinator follow-up with every single student who is absent. This enables the school to address concerns or causes for student absences. Students who attend school regularly are more likely to succeed academically. To promote school attendance, we have worked to provide a welcoming and safe atmosphere for parents and students. Students are rewarded for good attendance, and students are engaged in meaningful ways so that they want to come to school. Parents are considered partners in their student's education, and are encouraged to help the school in our endeavor to increase student attendance.
Identify the critical professional development activities you use to improve teaching and student learning.
Data analysis and vertical alignment has been critical to the success of our school. Grade levels hold monthly vertical alignment meetings which to determine which skills and concepts need to be taught within grade levels. This is important to help grade levels know which specific concepts are important in the grade below and grade above. This collaboration helps ensure teachers are in sync with the curriculum. It helps to prioritize, focus, and reinforce student learning.
Describe how data is used to improve student achievement and inform decision making.
Data is an important factor that drives instruction at Fay Herron. Grade levels hold weekly meetings to analyze data and determine student strength and areas of concern. We have a data coordinator who interprets data from various assessments to help formulate school-wide and grade-level goals. At the beginning of the year, Data Nights are held for each grade-level. Parents receive detailed information and data on their student, and are given ways to help students at home.
Describe your school culture and explain changes you’ve taken to improve it.
Our school culture is one of family, inclusion, and positivity. First, we started with the physical environment. Brightly painted murals were illustrated on the walls and in the courtyards to liven the atmosphere. Pictures of students were hung in the office to promote the atmosphere of student learning. Doors were painted with colorful illustrations. Next, we promoted meaningful parent involvement with our monthly Parent Meetings. Personal achievements and positive student behavior are celebrated on a monthly basis with the Student of the Month luncheon. Students are also able to earn coupons for positive behavior and trade for a special prize at the end of the month. Positive behavior is modeled, and discipline is consistent. Students are engaged in ways that promote social-emotional learning. Traditions and activities such as our Talent Show, our Potpourri Activities, and Field Day create fun memories for both teachers and students.
