Evergreen School
Colville, WA
We believe that all aspects of success at Evergreen school begin with relationships.
Describe specific programs in place to ensure that families are involved in the success of your school and students.
Describe the most successful activity your school has initiated to strengthen ties to your community.
Describe your philosophy of school change or improvement.
What are your school’s top two goals for the next year?
For many years, Evergreen School has been a multi-grade classroom school with a K-2 classroom and a 3-6 classroom. In recent years, the district has seen an increase in enrollment that has created larger class sizes and a waiting list for out of district students wanting to choice into Evergreen School. The district is seeking to reduce class sizes in the upcoming school year by adding a third teacher and creating a 5/6 classroom. This will allow us to better serve our surrounding community and individual student needs. Being so remote also brings challenges for professional development. Utilizing our Distinguished School funding, we will be looking for training that supports district goals that both teachers and paraprofessionals can benefit from. Desired areas of training include strategies for differentiated instruction in the areas of reading and mathematics as well as furthering the alignment of curriculum and instruction to Common Core Standards.
What is the single most important factor in the success of your school that others could replicate?
We believe that all aspects of success at Evergreen school begin with relationships. Due to our uniquely remote setting and reduced enrollment, our entire staff has the rare ability to know each student and their parents on a personal level. Teachers and administration have some form of communication with parents/families on a regular basis, whether this be by phone, in-person, or technology communications. These relationships build a culture of collaboration and a “Can Do!” attitude that inspires achievement. Students strive to meet high expectations when they are surrounded by people that genuinely care about them as individuals and clearly communicated to that they will be successful personally and academically.
Describe the program or initiative that has had the greatest positive effect on student achievement, including closing achievement or opportunity gaps, if applicable.
Explain how ESEA federal funds are used to support your improvement efforts.
Identify the critical professional development activities you use to improve teaching and student learning.
Describe how data is used to improve student achievement and inform decision making.
The use of data is imperative to measuring academic improvement and identifying areas in need of improvement. Evergreen School uses data in a variety of ways to make educated decisions involving instructional practices, providing student support, creating student and teacher growth goals and making decisions surrounding curriculum development. Staff meet regularly to analyze formal and informal data. Through State assessments, MAP assessment results, Classroom Based Assessments, and teacher generated data we are able to ascertain areas in need of improvement as well as celebrate success.
Describe your school culture and explain changes you’ve taken to improve it.
The greatest driver of change at Evergreen School has been the removal of the word “Can’t” from our vocabulary. We are working hard on growing as a supportive team that “Can Do.” This shift in attitude empowers us to focus on all of the great qualities and benefits of being a small school rather than the difficulties that exist. As a team, we remind each other that we serve a common goal and can accomplish great things when we work together. We embrace trust, respect, and appreciation for students, families and our community. This understanding allows us to work as a team that celebrates success and provides a platform for students and staff to enjoy leaning together.
