"It is in the heart and soul of the Ethan School District’s culture to commit and cultivate a student-centered atmosphere."
- 1. Tell us about your school’s success.
-
In recent years, Ethan School District has witnessed remarkable transformation in student achievement, community engagement, and overall school culture. This success story is built on a foundation of targeted programs and initiatives that have addressed key challenges and fostered a nurturing learning environment.
Recognizing the need for improvement in reading and math proficiency, the district implemented a robust Academic Intervention Program focused on early identification and support. This program provides personalized learning plans for students struggling in core subjects and offers regular one-on-one or small group sessions with interventions. Math and reading scores have improved significantly in students meeting grade-level expectations over the last two years.
Title I funding has been crucial in supporting students from low-income families and enhancing teacher quality. With these funds, the district has hired additional paraprofessionals who work closely with Title I students, providing targeted support in literacy and numeracy. Additionally, Title I resources have allowed for teacher professional development with a focus on differentiated instruction and inclusive practices. Teachers are now better equipped to meet diverse learning needs, contributing to an increase in student engagement and achievement.
As a community with strong agricultural roots, Ethan School District developed an Agricultural and Career Readiness Program, integrating local agricultural expertise and career-focused learning. High school students have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in fields such as agribusiness, environmental science, and technical skills related to farming and machinery. Partnerships with local farms and businesses have enhanced the program, offering students real-world experiences and fostering career pathways that align with the community’s economy. This program has led to an increase in high school graduates pursuing agricultural-related careers or further education.
Ethan School District has prioritized family and community engagement which encourages open dialogue between school staff, parents, and community members, creating support networks which extends beyond the classroom. The district’s family outreach initiatives have successfully built trust and strengthened relationships, leading to higher parental involvement and support for students.
Thanks to these initiatives, Ethan School District has observed notable increases in graduation rates, academic performance, and student attendance. The district has also been recognized by the Department of Education for our commitment to educational excellence and innovative programming. The combination of tailored academic support, career readiness, and community engagement has transformed the Ethan School District into a thriving educational environment that supports students at every stage of their learning journey.
- 2. Talk about the greatest contributing factor(s) that promoted positive change in your school.
-
The adoption of the Center for the Collaborative Classroom (CCC) reading curriculum has brought about substantial positive change for both elementary students and teachers in the Ethan School District. This curriculum has designed not only to build literacy skills but also to foster social-emotional learning, creating a more engaging and supportive environment for both students and educators.
CCC’s approach is rooted in interactive and collaborative learning, making reading lessons more engaging for students. By involving them in meaningful discussions about texts, encouraging critical thinking, and connecting stories to real-world situations, the curriculum has helped students become more active and interested readers. Most importantly, students are learning the love for reading. Teachers have reported that students are more eager to participate in reading activities and reading proficiency scores have steadily improved since CCC was adopted by the district.
A key component of the CCC curriculum is the integration of social-emotional learning (SEL). Each lesson includes opportunities for students to reflect on emotions, build empath, and develop a sense of community within the classroom. Through group discussions, collaborative projects, and peer feedback, students learn to communicate respectfully, listen to others, and express themselves thoughtfully. This SEL component has strengthened classroom dynamics, as students feel more connected and supported leading to improved behavior and stronger interpersonal relationships.
The CCC curriculum provides teachers with extensive resources and professional development opportunities, helping them feel more equipped and motivated. The collaborative nature of the curriculum allows teachers to focus on creating a student-centered classroom. Teachers appreciate the structured, yet flexible approach, which allows our teachers to adapt lessons to the specific needs of their students. This empowerment has led to increased job satisfaction and strong sense of purpose among teachers.
The ELA curriculum also encourages parental involvement by sharing learning goals and strategies with families, helping them support their child’s reading development at home. This collaboration between home and school has led to increased parental engagement, as families feel more involved in their child’s learning. Teachers have observed that students whose families engage with the curriculum tend to show greater progress in reading skills and exhibit more enthusiasm for reading.
By creating a classroom environment that values collaboration, respect, and empathy, the CCC curriculum has transformed the atmosphere of elementary classrooms. Teachers have observed a noticeable shift in classroom culture, with students showing greater kindness and willingness to support one another in their learning. This positive change has reduced instances of classroom conflicts and has made learning more inclusive and welcoming for all students.
The combined effects of improved literacy skills, social-emotional development, and a supportive classroom environment have led to a measurable boost in overall student achievement. Standardized reading assessments have shown steady improvements, with a larger percentage of students meeting or exceeding grade-level/benchmark expectations. In summary, the Center for the Collaborative Classroom curriculum has not only raised literacy outcomes but has also contributed to the emotional and social growth of students, enriching the educational experience for both students and teachers in the Ethan School District.
- 3. How has ESEA funding supported the school's success?
-
ESEA funding has been a vital support for the Ethan School District, enabling the district to create and sustain programs that address academic gaps, support professional development, and enhance the overall learning experience for students. This funding has played a central role in the district’s success by helping it respond to the diverse needs of students and teachers in our rural setting.
With Title I funds, the Ethan School District has been able to implement targeted academic interventions that provide individualized support for students struggling with literacy and math. These funds have helped the district employ intervention teachers and paraprofessionals who work one-on-one or in small groups with students needing extra support in these areas. Title I support has enabled the district to improve reading and math proficiency scores by ensuring that students needing additional resources receive the personalized instruction necessary to achieve grade-level/benchmark expectations.
Funding under ESEA has focused on teacher quality by providing professional development opportunities. Our district has used these funds to provide teachers with access to workshops, training sessions, and ongoing coaching in best instructional practices, including differentiated instructional, classroom management, and technology integration. This training has empowered teachers to adopt more effective teaching methods/strategies, leading to improved student engagement and learning outcomes. With a stronger, better-prepared faculty, Ethan School District has demonstrated measurable improvements in academic achievement and classroom climate.
The Ethan School District has had the ability to bridge the digital divide by supporting investments in technology infrastructure and devices with ESEA funding. Through the purchase of tablets, Chromebooks, and digital learning tools, we have enhanced students’ digital literacy and ensured equitable access to technology, which is especially critical in our rural area. Teachers have incorporated technology into their lessons, making learning more interactive and engaging. This access has not only improved students’ technology skills but has also enabled them to participate more fully in online resources, furthering their learning opportunities and preparing for a technology-driven world.
Funding through ESEA has allowed the district to offer summer enrichment programs that provide additional learning opportunities for students who need it most. This program supports students’ academic needs while also providing a safe, structured environment for social and emotional growth. The extra academic support helps to combat summer learning loss and provides a “jump start” for students entering into the new school year. Our district has observed that students who participate in our summer enrichment programs demonstrate more confidence and resilience in their regular classroom.
ESEA funding has also supported family engagement initiatives in the Ethan School District, encouraging families to take an active role in their students’ education. Communications with parents have strengthened the home-school connection, fostering a collaborative environment where families feel empowered to support their student’s learning. This involvement has been shown to positively impact student motivation and performance, as families and schools work together toward common goals.
Through ESEA funding, Ethan School District has been able to offer a well-rounded educational experience that addresses not only academic needs but also the social, emotional, and technological skills students require. This comprehensive support has led to higher proficiency rates, better attendance, and stronger engagement, contributing significantly to the district’s overall success.

Many teachers attend online courses and webinar opportunities provided by the South Dakota Department of Education to explore new instructional practices and deepen content knowledge. Technology professional development offers teachers in the Ethan School District the opportunity to enhance technology skills and collaborate on integrating technology into the classroom. The District has provided teachers with an Instructional Coach. Our Instructional Coach has provided one-on-one support to our teachers by offering professional feedback for teacher growth. The Instructional Coach also was available to teachers to model and teach best practices.
