Cherokee Elementary School
Pascagoula, MS
We work hard to build relationships.
- 1. Tell us about your school’s success.
- In 2019 Cherokee Elementary experienced a 100% pass rate on the State reading Gate test with the highest English Language Learners in the district.
- 2. Talk about the greatest contributing factor(s) that promoted positive change in your school.
- We have an amazing EL staff. They have been instrumental in building relationships with our EL students. Because we have built these relationships, our EL population is not afraid to come to the school and ask questions. They know we work hard to build relationships. This has been a huge contributing factor in shifting the culture here at Cherokee.
- 3. How has ESEA funding supported the school's success?
- Through the use of ESEA funding, Cherokee has been able to more effectively communicate with parents with the hiring of spanish speaking assistant teachers and other resources used in the school including the program Imagine Learning. Cherokee is 100% free lunch.
- 4. What professional development activities were used to improve teaching and learning?
- Teachers at Cherokee have participated in professional development that promotes the understanding of the hispanic culture as well as profession development that supports understanding of those living in poverty. Teachers have learning about McKinney Vento homeless students. Teachers have studied Explicit Vocabulary Instruction and Phonics for Reading
- 5. Talk about the cultural shift leading up to your school's success.
- As poverty has risen, teachers at Cherokee have had to dig deep into the performance of their students and work towards building knowledge and filling gaps. We do this by analyzing tests taken regularly in the school.
- 6. How has community involvement strengthened your success?
- Because of community involvement, we are able to provide for our students in needs. Many community organizations donate to our clothing closet as well as the Backpack Buddies community food bank. Through Backpack Buddies, we are able to send home a grocery sack of food each weekend with students that might not have any other means of eating over the weekend.
