- 1. Tell us about your school’s success.

Our school success is rooted in that we share our vision on a regular basis with all our stakeholders and students. Our vision is basic and simple. Our goal is that we want to be the best elementary school in our system, it does not matter if we are a Title I school or not. We believe that free lunch does not determine how you learn!
Our staff is competitive and challenges our students. For example, we share the fifth grade math data from other schools in the district with our fifth grade math teachers and so on. We show them where we stand in relation to other schools. Our faculty embraces the concept that we want to score the best and be the best in our system. Our teachers target the progress of our students, and offer rewards/incentives for our students to do better.
School culture is just as important as data, discipline, and attendance. Without a strong culture, you won’t have great data, discipline, and attendance. All of these factors have led to success here at BES.
- 2. Talk about the greatest contributing factor(s) that promoted positive change in your school.

BES has a lot of factors/programs that have boosted our culture in a successful way. One of them is the Rockstar Slip Program. Our staff initiated a new reward system a couple of years ago. We now have two types of referrals. One is the traditional discipline referral, the other is the “rockstar” slip. We offer rockstar slips to all students, and every staff member can issue these slips. They are simple and quick to write.There are several reasons a teacher may select for a student receiving the rock star slip. The slip comes in triplicate, one copy goes in a big container in the office for everyone to see, the other goes home with the student to hopefully show their parents, and the third copy goes to the staff member. Then, in the Spring we hold a big assembly in the gym to draw names. We have a “celebrity” draw for prizes such as a 32’ TV, Beats headphones, a Nintendo Switch, Legos etc. This is also part of our Champs/Foundations Program which has helped lead to our success.
- 3. How has ESEA funding supported the school's success?

ESEA funding has been essential in promoting equity and fostering Brookwood’s success by ensuring every student receives needed support. The funding enables the school to employ two full-time paraprofessionals for math and reading interventions for K-6 students, along with two part-time contract instructors who provide supplemental instruction. Extended day programs, including before- and after-school tutoring for grades 2-6, offer tailored support in critical areas. A portion of the funds supports the district’s summer school program, ensuring continued academic progress. Additionally, ESEA funding facilitates ongoing professional development, equipping staff with effective strategies in math and reading. Through strategic use of resources, ESEA funding has transformed educational delivery at Brookwood, driving equity and academic success.
- 4. What professional development activities were used to improve teaching and learning?

Teachers and staff at Brookwood Elementary School are offered many opportunities to improve instruction which in turn naturally improves student learning. Teachers are active with our regional Alabama Math Science and Technology Initiative and Alabama Reading Initiative. Through these initiatives teachers have received in-depth training in Foundations of Mathematics, Additive, Multiplicative, Fractional, and Proportional strategies and science of reading strategies. Teachers and staff also participate in regular collaborative experiences with other math teachers at their grade level across Enterprise City Schools. In addition, one teacher at each grade level represents our school on a system-wide Math Leadership Team. These teams work together to develop yearly pacing guides and to modify assessments and the instruction of State Standards to meet the individual needs of our students.
- 5. Talk about the cultural shift leading up to your school's success.

Here at BES we are always working to strengthen/ improve our culture through academics, attendance, discipline, and accountability. We start the year with a staff lunch where I serve the staff, setting the pace for the year. We include everyone from the Assistant Principal to the custodians. We have culture building activities with our students, and our parents such as Christmas Open House where we show our door decorations that parents, students and staff have participated in, our staff plays games like BINGO and rock, paper, scissors throughout the year. If the culture is good with the staff, it will spread to the students. We offer many incentive reward programs for our students in academics, attendance and behavior. We have a strong extracurricular program also. We invite our parents/stakeholders to be a part of what we do at Brookwood as well. These practices that involve all of us lead to greater successes. The direct beneficiaries being of course our students!
- 6. How has community involvement strengthened your success?

Community involvement has played a pivotal role in strengthening the relationships between students, faculty, staff, and the broader community. Through active engagement with local businesses such as Lowe's, Walmart, and Chick-fil-A, along with collaboration with parent volunteers and the Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO), our school has built strong, supportive connections across all levels. These partnerships have enriched the academic experience and enhanced leadership, communication, and teamwork skills. By working with diverse groups—businesses contributing resources and parents supporting events—students and staff alike have learned the importance of empathy and conflict resolution. These experiences have been instrumental in fostering a sense of community and shared responsibility, motivating all members to strive for success both inside and outside the classroom.
