Bayside Sixth Grade Campus
VIRGINIA BEACH, VA
"We believe in "Excellence without Excuses."
1. Tell us about your school’s success.
Our teachers, specialists, and support staff collaborate in Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) to plan lessons, review student data, and integrate research-based instructional practices.

On the 2022 Grade 6 Reading SOL exam, the accreditation combined rate for Bayside Sixth grade Campus was 89%. Previously, in 2019, the accreditation combined rate was 89%. According to the Accreditation Report, Bayside Sixth Grade Campus achieved Level One status for achievement gaps in Asian, Black, Economically Disadvantaged, English Learners, Hispanic, Multi-Races, Students with Disabilities, and White student groups.

On the 2022 Grade 6 Mathematics SOL exam, the accreditation combined rate was 89%. According to the Accreditation Report, Bayside Sixth Grade Campus achieved Level One status for Achievement gaps in Asian, Black, Economically Disadvantaged, English learners, Hispanic, Multi-Races, Students with Disabilities, and White student groups.
2. Talk about the greatest contributing factor(s) that promoted positive change in your school.
Two of the greatest contributing factors are that we integrate literacy school-wide and are hyperfocused on students' individual data. We made literacy a priority in all content areas. Teachers and administration use data to identify student needs and to continuously monitor the progress of literacy instruction across the school. Data from pre/mid/post assessments, Reading Inventory, cold reads, formative/summative assessments, Achieve 3000, NoRedInk, and English IXL assist with teachers' small group instruction, tutoring, remediation, and third bell “Raider Prep” support assignments. The data determines the next steps, adjusts instruction, and reassess learning.

As a school, we make sure all we do is aligned with our Plan for Continuous Improvement, so the purpose, goals, and strategies support our path to progress.
3. How has ESEA funding supported the school's success?
As a school family, Bayside Sixth Grade Campus realizes how much minor adjustments can greatly impact our success when it comes to effective family engagement. Through ESEA funding, families have had opportunities to participate in math and literacy programs such as the Science Symposium, Math & Movie Night, Pi Night, Literacy Showcase, Spelling Bee, Math and Movie Night, Raider Reading Cafe, and our annual Meet and Greet.

We have also been able to leverage our Ron Clark Academy-inspired House System to support PBIS, create a sense of belongingness for our students, and bridge our families and community. In addition, ESEA funding has assisted us with professional development for almost all of our staff.

We used ESEA funding to purchase a book vending machine, used it as an incentive for students, an at-home library for each student, updated classroom libraries, motivational speakers for students, and purchased the SIPPS program for our English teachers.
4. What professional development activities were used to improve teaching and learning?
At the beginning of the year, administration collaborates with the ILT to select our instructional focus areas and the professional learning plan. Two of Bayside’s primary professional learning (PL) focuses this year is Writing/AVID strategies and Social-Emotional (SEL) strategies. Central office staff led the Cross-Curricular Literacy Strategies session. The literacy PL was then supported by our AVID central office staff, who presented AVID writing strategies. The social-emotional PL track considers a much-needed intentional approach to student learning. The focus was on students’ needs and strengths to raise expectations and make learning relevant for all students. To support social-emotional learning, our professional development includes; SRT/SECs/IEPs/504s/Student-Led Conferences, RCA House and House System, PBIS/Responsive Classroom, Identifying Gifted Learners, RCA - Amazing Shake, Responsive Classroom’s Morning Meetings, and culturally responsive practices (CRP).
5. Talk about the cultural shift leading up to your school's success.
We believe in "Excellence without Excuses."

Our cultural shift was the integration of "extended family." We use family to describe our relationships with students and their families. Our school has adopted the Ron Clark Academy House system. The house system is used to divide our school into four houses but still one family. It is designed to help build a positive climate and culture for students and staff. It aligns to our school PBIS expectations and meaningful SEL skills and practices. Documented improvements have been made in student-student and teacher-student relationships and school spirit. Using our house point system, students participate in fun competitions and recognize outstanding character traits and accomplishments.

We intentionally invest time in making sure students learn and understand Bayside Sixth Grade Campus’ values and expectations using the RCA House System. Families also attend to develop an awareness of the program and how they can support it.
6. How has community involvement strengthened your success?
We invite our community to participate in almost all of our school events.

Our biggest event is our participation in the RCA Amazing Shake competition. Throughout the year, our students prepare to compete at the school level and in the National Amazing Shake Competition. Students have the opportunity to participate in multiple phases of school competitions where they practice and are assessed on interpersonal and soft skills that align with their PBIS program and house system. Each round of competition focuses on different skills and has different community members participate in the competition.

We have also partnered with EVERFI for our financial literacy initiative. We hold a job fair and invite local businesses and professions to meet with our students based on their interest survey through Major Clarity. We are most proud to have the first PTA for our school. Community involvement has strengthened us as a school family.
