Describe specific programs in place to ensure that families are involved in the success of your school and students.
Parent Coffee Hour is run by the parent facilitator. Parents meet to ask and have questions answered, present concerns and attend trainings on parenting, how to help there students in reading and math, health, community services, etc.
Coffee hour with the principal provides updates on school improvement, upcoming events.
Family Fun Nights family activities that include math, reading, science, board games, etc.
Describe the most successful activity your school has initiated to strengthen ties to your community.
Our Parent Facilitator helps to strengthen ties between the school and community. She has provided opportunities for parents to increase their knowledge of the methods teachers use to improve reading and math skill and to feel more comfortable and connected to our school.

Our Parent facilitator is aware of and has developed relationships with organizations that provide services that are available to parents and families in the community. She has put together a series of workshops that bring in community agencies to discuss topics that directly affect our parents and students, and also agencies that offer services and resources that meet some of the identified needs of out school population.

Our parent facilitator has developed a monthly outreach activity for parents that allows them to be instrumental in giving back to their community. The parents volunteer their services at the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan, which is an organization that also gives to our students.
Describe your philosophy of school change or improvement.
Our students need to have equal opportunities to achieve to their fullest. Teaching and learning has to adapt to strengthen the area in which our students fall short. This often means changing to meet student needs. In order for change to be successful we must do all we can to get buy in from stakeholders. Open and honest discussions and review of data has to reveal our successes and failures.

Accountability Testing, data analysis
Describe the program or initiative that has had the greatest positive effect on student achievement, including closing achievement or opportunity gaps, if applicable.
Accelerated Reader and Reader's workshop have helped students to acquire the skills necessary to become successful readers. The level of our student's reading has grown and our students have become more comfortable choosing books and reading independently. Both Accelerated Reader and Readers workshop
have increased skills in vocabulary building and have help students develop the habit of reading for practice and enjoyment.
Explain how Title I funds are used to support your improvement efforts.
Title I funds are used to support teaching and learning through the use of technology, Class size reduction , academic tutors, kindergarten paraprofessionals, leveled readers, a social worker and a parent facilitator.
Title I funds have provided a good amount of technology to promote learning . All classrooms have Smart boards and 3--5 computers for student use. We have two computer labs with 34 computers each, 4 mobile carts with 15 Windows computers each, 20 iPads with an additional 40 coming.
Title I funds have also provided the ability to purchase several technology-based programs: Renaissance Learning with STAR testing, Accelerated Reader, Math Facts in a Flash. We also have Study Island, More Starfall, Success Maker, EdHelper, Brain Pop, Learning A-Z, and Tumble books. We will be purchasing IXL, a web-based program that provides comprehensive, standards-aligned math and language arts practice for K-12.

Describe how data is used to improve student achievement and inform decision making.
Data helps us to discover what the student's struggles are and the type of interventions needed. Data from Star tests, NWEA, leveled reader results, common assessments,exit slips, etc. help is to redesign our lessons and goals. The results have helped us to monitor student learning and identify areas where students are struggling. This information informs teachers of the adjustments needed in their teaching and students can adjust or find new ways to study. Data is also used to measure the extent to which students have achieved specific learning outcomes.
Describe your school culture and explain changes you’ve taken to improve it.
Our school is located in a district that has a strong sense of community pride. Unity, teamwork, family, safety and life-long learning for all stakeholders defines our culture.
Continuous PD, sharing of ideas, successes and failures keep our staff grounded and on the same path. We strive to provide an environment where all stakeholders feel safe, respected and nurtured.
Learning is our number one priority. This is accomplished by providing clear policies and expectations for the behaviors of all stakeholders. Our leadership team helps to make sure that decisions are made with input from all stake holders. Youth Advisory Committee helps to make sure that our students are also involved. The development of PBIS has been essential in reducing the number of discipline referrals. Accelerated Reader has reduced the frustration level of many students. Celebrations, family fun nights and the overall excitement of improved STAR reading and math scores are a part of our make- up.
