Freeing Student Potential through Social and Emotional Education
The session explores overcoming barriers to learning that Title I school students face by integrating social-emotional learning (SEL) in every classroom with a systematic, curricular approach: Positive Action. Participants will discuss solutions to schoolwide behavioral challenges & consider research supporting integrated SEL by demonstrating improved student & schoolwide outcomes. Participants will see how a curriculum teaching fundamental skills for the physical, intellectual, social & emotional development of youth reduces demands on teachers, improves school climate & creates space for learning. Positive Action has been shown to help close the achievement gap. While all students benefit from improved social-emotional skills, students in high-poverty schools get the greatest benefit, in some cases achieving gains of 90% on state reading & math tests. Participants will learn how these outcomes were reached & how Positive Action engages students in a transformative educational process
