Hocking Hills Elementary
Logan, OH
We believe the greatest positive initiative in the school is an overall "positive mindset."
Describe the most successful activity your school has initiated to strengthen ties to your community.
Since 2009, Hocking Hills Elementary has had joint partnership with our local hospital, Hocking Valley Community Hospital. Each month, staff from the hospital teach lessons in each of our classrooms. This partnership has never wavered. It has been a win-win or both sides. The building takes part in other community activities such as family literacy nights, open house events and with a newly formed parent-involvement committee.
What is the single most important factor in the success of your school that others could replicate?
Very simply: poverty is not looked upon as an obstacle that cannot be hurdled. In spite of high poverty, a love of children combined with high expectations for learning are at the core of Hocking Hills Elementary and the entire staff.
Describe the program or initiative that has had the greatest positive effect on student achievement, including closing achievement or opportunity gaps, if applicable.
While the school uses multiple Tier II interventions, we believe the greatest positive initiative in the school is an overall mindset. When professional development is offered, the initiative is embraced, piloted and proven successful due to the commitment and professionalism of the staff. The staff views new initiatives as a means to better meet the needs of high poverty students and takes it upon themselves to research and imbed themselves in order to help children.
Explain how Title I funds are used to support your improvement efforts.
Title I funds are used to employ a Title I teacher as well as a tutor. Programs/items such as AR, Lexia, technology devices, LLI, Wilson Fundations, and book room materials have all been purchased using Title I funds. A contract service agreement with university professor Terri Green has been paid in order for the school to use a Guided Reading Model. All district professional development opportunities have been paid out of Title I.
Describe how data is used to improve student achievement and inform decision making.
Hocking Hills Elementary is a data rich environment, continually monitoring all formal and informal data resources in order to provide the most individualized education for each student. DRA, STAR, LLI, state assessment data, FIP, (etc) are all used. Grade level and title personnel meet weekly to look at data and make informed decisions as to flexible grouping of students. Data, communication and looking at each child, their strengths as well as deficiencies is the hallmark to growth.
