Supporting Refugee Arrivals: What Schools Need to Know

Thursday February 2, 2023
4:00 - 5:00 PM
Room 103-106

Each year, our schools welcome thousands of refugee arrivals through resettlement, asylum, and humanitarian parole. This population experiences unique challenges in our educational system and requires schools to be creative in addressing potential barriers to enrollment, course placement, systems of support, and community integration. This session will explore the challenges and lessons learned throughout a county with a history of refugee resettlement and Unaccompanied Minor placement, including recent arrivals through Operation Allies Welcome and Uniting for Ukraine. Opportunities for community collaboration through School Impact Grants and Title III Immigrant funds will be highlighted as well as systemic recommendations to create a welcoming school environment for our new neighbors.
