Helping Parents and Families Increase Their Literacy

Thursday February 2, 2023
9:30 - 11:00 AM
Room 143-145

In this session we'll cover a program being used in schoolwide Title I Part A schools in Frisco, Texas to increase the knowledge and skills that parents and other adult family members have around reading with their children. The goal of this program is to increase the capabilities of parents and families, as well as their confidence in not only helping their children learn to read, but partnering with teachers in that process through shared language. Resources and materials will be provided that can be tweaked for implementation in any district, including an asynchronous course, powerpoints for synchronous face to face or virtual workshop sessions, and a program that allows parents to practice reading with their children with supporting questions and reflection cycles. Each element will be explained, and time will be given for exploring the materials, discussing with others about how you might implement a similar program, and asking questions.
