According to the International Dyslexia Association, the principles of instruction and content of a Structured Literacy program are essential for teaching students to read. Structured Literacy is a representative of reading instruction that applies the Science of Reading to actual classroom practice. Without Structured Literacy instruction, the outcome for many students is little or no growth in reading with declining achievement skills. Certain concepts and principles must be included in Structured Literacy instruction. This presentation will give educators a better understanding of what Structured Literacy is, how it is applied through the Science of Reading, and the principles of instruction which are deemed “essential” for remediating mild to severe reading difficulties, including dyslexia, along with promoting strong reading instruction for ALL students.
