Promoting STEM Skill Development through Literacy and Language Acquisition

This session highlights a case study and approach used by several Southwest Washington districts to boost student engagement in STEM, especially for English Learners. Our approach embraces student access to renew the commitment to language and acquisition of STEM-relevant skills such as collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity. It also takes into consideration the needs of diverse learners who are best able to access learning through opportunities providing relevant and authentic contexts. The integration of learning across disciplines helps schools recommit to problem solving and STEM time, which has plummeted this past year (especially for elementary students), setting all students at a disadvantage from opportunities to reimagine the application of 21st-Century skills. This session includes time for collaboration and shared learning on developing literacy-based STEM Project-based learning units with an explicit, intentional focus on supporting English Language learners.
