School Districts are embracing social and emotional learning to support students and help them succeed academically and in life. Research shows that SEL leads to improved academic achievement, employment, health, and well-being. Benefits for educators include reducing inequity in schools while enhancing the learning environments. Schools can also expect to reduce opportunity gaps and create more supportive learning environments. Social-emotional learning skills are shaped by each student's life experiences and backgrounds, including gender, race, culture, and class. Inequities, such as disabilities, poverty, and discrimination, can pose barriers to children’s social and emotional development. Creating a foundation for SEL and a focus on equity, educators can promote the environments that enable students to grow their abilities and reach their full potential. In this workshop, we will offer a comprehensive multi-part model of SEL, easy to incorporate into school culture and instruction.
