Recipe for Building a Successful School from Ground Zero: Making a Masterpiece

This presentation is designed to provide participants with valuable insight into a school's turnaround journey. Members of the school staff will describe the early barriers that they encountered and offer key levers that assisted in the academic, behavioral, and social/emotional development of their students. Our presentation will also provide participants with perspective into the systematic approach school stakeholders undertook to transform the school culture and making steady gains in student achievement. This presentation will provide school leaders with ideas of key factors to consider and proactively plan for if they are considering the Turnaround Model of school improvement. Areas that will be addressed include how the school's shared leadership has led change through its intentional organization and use of various types of DATA aligned to student learning.

Retonia Lindsey

Retonia Lindsey is a 4th grade ELA and Social Studies teacher at D.S. Johnson Elementary School. Her passion for education and children stems from seeing her mom and other model educators. Her experience as an educator has afforded her the opportunity to serve as grade level chair, Teacher mastery chair, and a mentor.
Teresa Pittman

Teresa Pittman is a third grade teacher at D.S. Johnson Elementary in North Carolina. She believes that children are unique and learn at their own pace. Along with teaching third grade, she is Grade Chair, PBIS Co-Chair, and has been recognized by District and State for outstanding growth in third grade reading.
Michelle Royster

Mrs. Royster is a devoted educator who knows from her experience how to help develop and encourage teachers to be leaders. She believes that it is her job and duty to empower others so that one person cannot be the glue that holds a school together or causes a school to fall. She has been blessed and rewarded through the last five years with a group of supportive community partners and a committed staff.
