For decades, summer “enrichment” at J.S. Abrams Elementary School was really just a glorified tutoring program. Faced with the challenge of improving student achievement, the staff at this “failing” Title 1 school in Bessemer, Alabama decided to think outside the box when designing the school’s extended summer half – day program, creating something that more closely resembled specialty summer camp programs offered at high cost venues. Each teacher designed a STREAM teaching strand, including Robotics, Forensics, Cooking with Books, Art and Books, Science Experiments, Literacy Fun, Engineering, Burning Fun (recess), journaling and weekly trips into the “field” replaced skill and drill. Join these innovative school leaders and learn how to design a dynamic summer program, including scheduling ideas, standards based lesson plans, assessment strategies, and ways to inspire students and school staff to create change by making learning fun!
