Eads Elementary has developed a "team" approach. Our main philosophy is the sooner we can identify a weakness, the better chance we have for successful interventions.
Describe specific programs in place to ensure that families are involved in the success of your school and students.
It is not a specific program, but the practice of communicating with parents from the very first day. There are open lines of communications and staff are diligent and timely in communicating with parents in any areas that their student may benefit. Parents are given the opportunity to be as involved in their child's education as they choose.
Describe the most successful activity your school has initiated to strengthen ties to your community.
Eads elementary has an open house within the first month of school so that the community can meet the staff and become familiar with the campus and the classrooms. There has been an open chain of communication established and parents are contacted early in the process if concerns arise. Parents are encouraged to call, email, or text anytime they have questions or concerns.
Describe your philosophy of school change or improvement.
Our main philosophy is the sooner we can identify a weakness or an area of improvement with a student, the better chance we have for interventions to be successful. We have aligned curriculum and grade level expectations to ensure that all staff are aware of where a student should be academically when he/she enters a grade, and when he/she exits a grade.
What are your school’s top two goals for the next year?
1. To give every student the opportunity to reach his/her ability level, regardless of gender, ethnicity, home environment, or socio-economic status.
2. To be the best elementary school in the state of Colorado
What is the single most important factor in the success of your school that others could replicate?
Eads Elementary has developed a "team" approach as a whole school. It is no longer just the teachers of the grade levels that are tested that take the responsibility and concern to show achievement of state and local assessments. The entire pre-k-5 staff focuses on successful testing skills and strategies to ensure each student reaches his/her portential and succeeds.
Describe the program or initiative that has had the greatest positive effect on student achievement, including closing achievement or opportunity gaps, if applicable.
The emphasis of phonics-based reading programs has been instrumental to our success. We have introduced higher level concepts at earlier ages, and have interventionist to assist struggling students. Progress monitoring is a continual process and student achievement is documented and tracked. Teachers of all grades know the strengths and weakness of each student before he/she enters each grade.
Explain how Title I funds are used to support your improvement efforts.
We budget 100% of our Title One funds to salaries of interventionists.
Identify the critical professional development activities you use to improve teaching and student learning.
We have found that professional workshops and conferences can be beneficial. However, we have spent more time and resources discussing how to improve internally with our staff. The staff are well aware of what students should know when they leave each grade level, as well as what students are expected to know when they begin each grade level..
Describe how data is used to improve student achievement and inform decision making.
Local and standardized achievement assessments are periodically administered. Students that score below expectations are placed in remediation and intervention programs. Eads Elementary offers programs after school and in the summer for struggling students.
Describe your school culture and explain changes you’ve taken to improve it.
I have been the superintendent in this district for 16 years. Before taking the office, the school board and I created a board/superintendent agreement. Number one focus has been making decisions based on what is best for students. This has created a very safe learning environment, and teachers feel they are supported and valued. Administration can do their jobs and focus on achievement and instruction.
